After buying a bag of gummy bears as part of our exploration of the best candy in the world, we wondered what to do with the extra bears. We didn’t have to think too long or hard to come up with the idea of using them to create one of our most colorful cocktails ever.

Yes, for us, it’s a slippery slope between candy and cocktails. But this cocktail tastes surprisingly good. It invokes the inner child while satisfying adult needs. It’s also a fun drink to serve at Halloween parties.

What Is the Gummy Bear Cocktail?

The gummy bear cocktail is a sippable version of the colorful, chewy candy. Crafted with two liquors (citrus vodka and peach schnapps) plus cranberry juice and grenadine, it’s a potent punch that’s suitable for grown ups only.

Gummy bears aren’t just this cocktail’s inspiratio. They’re also an integral part of the cocktail’s recipe. Not only do they add color, but the chewy little cubs are fun to nibble. Whether you drop your teddies into the cocktail before you eat them is up to you.

History of Gummy Bears

Haribo started selling gummy bears called Goldbären in Germany more than a century ago. Despite the German name that literally translates to gold bears, these gummies are sold in a rainbow of colors around the world. Interestingly, Haribo’s gummy bear flavors aren’t the same in every country. The US flavors are lemon, orange, pineapple, raspberry and strawberry while the German version includes apple.

Other candy brands have jumped onto the bandwagon and sell gummy bears in different colors, flavors and sizes. Many, like Haribo, also sell gummy candies shaped like berries, birds and worms.

You need the following ingredients to craft a gummy bear cocktail:

  • Vodka Citron: We originally bought a bottle of Absolut Citron to craft Cosmopolitan cocktails. Distilled in Sweden, the lemon-flavored vodka has a 40% ABV.
  • Peach Schnapps: We bought a bottle of DeKuyper Peachtree peach schnapps with a 15% ABV. The sweet Dutch liqueur is a key ingredient in cocktails like the Fuzzy Navel.
  • Grenadine: We recommend using Monin grenadine syrup unless you’re an over-achiever who prefers to make grenadine from scratch. The French syrup company doesn’t add any artificial colors or flavors to its bright red pomegranate syrup.
  • Cranberry Cocktail Juice: We bought a small bottle of Tropicana cranberry cocktail juice but any brand will work in this recipe.
  • Gummy Bears (garnish): While we’re partial to Haribo Goldbären, any gummy bear brand will work in this recipe. Be aware that other gummy bears may come in different colors compared to the Haribo bears.
  • Ice Cubes (for shaking)

Ingredient quantities are detailed in the printable recipe card below.

When you’re ready to take your gummy bear passion to the next level, the first step is to measure the gummy bear cocktail’s four liquids, immediately pouring each into a cocktail shaker. We use a Japanese jigger to ensure accurate measurements and clean pours.

Buy a Japanese jigger from Amazon if you need a jigger or want an inexpensive upgrade.

Add a handful of ice cubes and shake until the four liquids are chilled and combined (approximately 10 seconds).

Since the gummy bear cocktail isn’t an official IBA cocktail, feel free to experiment with this recipe. Here are some ideas to get your creative juices flowing:

  • Pour the shaken cocktail into shot glasses to create gummy bear shots.
  • Replace the citrus-flavored vodka with another fruity vodka flavor like peach, pear or raspberry.
  • Replace the cranberry juice with a different fruit juice like apple juice or pineapple juice.
