We loved eating Oreos when we were kids and we still love eating them as adults. We’re not alone. The Oreo is a classic sandwich cookie that’s grown from an American classic to a worldwide sensation. Even Weird Al Yankovic sang about his Oreo obsession.

Eating an Oreo still makes us happy whether we bite into it whole, eat the cream first or dunk the entire cookie into a glass of cold milk. Yum, yum and yum!

What Is An Oreo?

An Oreo isn’t just a sandwich cookie that’s filled with sweet sugary cream. It’s also the most popular cookie in both America and the world.

Oreo sales have reportedly exceeded half a trillion dollars since original owner Nabisco sold the first Oreos in New York City back in 1912. Fast forward to the present and current owner Mondelez International produces more than 40 billion Oreo cookies each year. That’s a lot of Oreos!

Oreo competed with Hydrox, a similar cream-filled chocolate sandwich cookie, during much of the 20th century. Today, it competes with itself with a current product roster that includes a range of flavors as well as variations on the original cookie-to-cream ratio. Some, like the Lemon Oreo, are permanent while others, like Halloween Oreos, are limited to a season or year.

After dipping our toes into the Oreo flavor pool when we discovered Golden Oreos a few years ago, we started to wonder which Oreo flavor is best. To answer this question, we jumped into the deep end by buying and trying as many Oreos as we could find.

We went big. We went small. We twisted, we licked and we dunked. And then we did it again and again until we taste tested them all. These are our favorites:

1. Original Oreo

The original Oreo is the alpha Oreo to which all other Oreos should be compared. It’s also vegan, kosher and milk’s favorite cookie. This is the Oreo that launched an empire when it was first baked in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood more than a century ago. The vanilla cream-filled chocolate sandwich cookie is now sold and beloved in more than 100 countries.

Our Take on Original Oreos
While the Original Oreo holds a special place in both of our hearts, we disagree about the best way to eat it. Daryl likes to bite into his Original Oreos while Mindi is a fan of the twist and lick approach.

2. Double Stuf / Double Creme Oreo

Introduced in 1974, Double Stuf Oreos have been making life sweeter with a double dose of cream filling. We like everything about this Oreo except for its name which misspells stuff as stuf. Kudos to European countries that market this Oreo flavor as Double Creme, a moniker that makes way more sense to these two grammar geeks.

Our Take on Double Stuf Oreos
The Double Stuf Oreo is essentially an Oreo with twice as much cream as found in the Original Oreo. We approve of this ramped up cream-to-cookie ratio whether Daryl takes a big bite or Mindi employs the age-old twist and lick technique.

3. Golden Oreo

Nabisco made waves when it starting selling cookies that replaced the classic Oreo’s dark brown chocolate biscuits with golden vanilla biscuits. The gamble paid off. Today, purists can stick with original Oreos while people who love choices can choose between original Oreos or Golden Oreos depending on their mood.

Our Take on Golden Oreos
Although Golden Oreos hit the market in 2004, we didn’t discover the revolutionary flavor until 2018. It was love at first bite back then and ranks as one of our favorite Oreo flavors to this day.

4. Birthday Cake / Birthday Party Oreo

Everybody loves birthdays, especially when they involve parties and cake. The same can’t be said about Birthday Cake Oreos which are filled with birthday cake flavored cream and decorated with sprinkles. These festive Oreos are sweeter than Original Oreos which works works for some but not for all.

Our Take on Birthday Cake Oreos
We want to love the Birthday Cake Oreo but its cream filling is oh-so sweet. And, since we’re sprinkle fans, we’re a bit disappointed that they don’t have more sprinkles. It’s a cool concept though.

5. Chocolate / Choc’o Brownie Oreo

Unlike the Golden Oreo which replaces chocolate biscuits with vanilla biscuits, Chocolate Oreos go a different direction by replacing vanilla cream with chocolate cream. The result is a sandwich cookie that’s a full-on chocolate experience. This can be a good or bad thing depending on the level of a person’s chocolate obsession.

Our Take on Chocolate Oreos
The Chocolate Oreo satisfied our chocolate cravings in one swoop. It’s kind of ‘one-notey’ but, since its one note is chocolate, we’re okay with that.

6. Strawberry Cheesecake Oreo

Instead of vanilla cream, Strawberry Cheesecake Oreos are filled with strawberry cheesecake flavored cream. As a bonus, the fruity cream is pink which adds a fun element for those who utilize the twist and lick approach.

Our Take on Strawberry Cheesecake Oreos
While we can’t say that Strawberry Cheesecake Oreo tastes like actual strawberry cheesecake, we can say that it tastes good. We can also say the the cream’s pink color makes us happy.

7. Twists Vanilla & Caramel / Remix Caramel & Vanilla Oreo

The word twist takes on a new meaning in the Twists Vanilla & Caramel Oreo where a layer of caramel cream is added to the traditional Oreo recipe. While the amount of cream in this Oreo is similar to the amount of cream in a Double Stuf Oreo, half of it is caramel flavored.

Our Take on Twists Vanilla & Caramel Oreos
While we liked the visual impact of the layered creams, we were initially disappointed that the caramel wasn’t salty. However, we easily remedied this first world problem by manually adding a sprinkle of sea salt.

8. Twists Vanilla & Raspberry / Remix Raspberry & Vanilla Oreo

The concept behind the Twists Vanilla & Raspberry Oreo is similar to the Twists Vanilla & Caramel Oreo concept. However, this Oreo flavor has a pink layer of raspberry cream instead of a caramel cream layer.

Our Take on Twists Vanilla & Raspberry Oreos
The raspberry cream overwhelms the vanilla cream which can be a good or bad thing based on your perspective. Since we like raspberries, it’s a good thing for us.

9. Mini Oreos

Mini Oreos are exactly what they sound like – miniature Oreos packaged in snack-sized bags. While we taste tested miniature Original Oreos, Mondelez also sells miniature Golden Oreos.

Our Take on Mini Oreos
Mini Oreos taste like Original Oreos. However, they’re smaller and fun to nosh. Since we like Original Oreos, we like Mini Oreos too.

10. Crunchy Bites

Crunchy Bites are essentially Mini Oreos coated with milk chocolate. Ideal for sharing, the bag we purchased had four servings of the bite-sized treats.

Our Take on Crunchy Bite Oreos
Chocolate covered Oreos would have been a dream come true when we were kids. We like them now but we would have loved them then.
