During three weeks of food travel in Hanoi, we kept looking for a great banh mi, but, alas, we never found one. Ironically, we found the best banh mi in Vietnam at Banh Mi Phuong on our second day in Hoi An, the charming, touristy city in the center of the country.

The Banh Mi seems like a simple sandwich, but the iconic Vietnamese food is one of the best sandwiches in the world. At least when they’re made correctly.

Starting with baguettes that would make a French chef proud, the industrious Vietnamese sandwich makers at Banh Mi Phuong work in harmony to build the best possible banh mi for each customer. Herbs are fresh and condiments are flavorful.

By our fourth visit, we were arguably regulars. We realized this when the server knew our order (numbers eight and nine) before we said it out loud. For self-proclaimed sandwich experts, this was a victory that deserved a celebratory beer.

If you don’t believe us, then ask the motley crew patiently waiting for their banh mi sandwiches in front of the restaurant at all times of day and night. Young, old, male, female – all share our banh mi love.

Banh Mi Phuong is located at 2B Phan Châu Trinh, tp. Hội An, Quảng Nam, Vietnam.
