Scenes From A Tokyo 7-11

There’s nothing like a Tokyo 7-11 for ATMs, snacks and even sushi. Best of all, you can buy green tea Kit Kats and other Japanese candy.

You’ve just arrived in Tokyo on an international flight from the U.S., and you’re jet-lagged. You could only stay awake so long, and now you’re groggy from the nap that you vowed not to take. It’s 3 am, but it feels like 3 pm due to the time difference.

You’re hungry, but there’s not a whole lot of Japanese food options at this time of the morning. You could go to a late-night ramen shop except that you want more variety, a wide selection of drinks and a gallery of sweets. Fortunately, for you, the answer exists on almost every street corner of the sprawling metropolis.

The Tokyo 7-11.

That’s right. The American convenience store staple is huge in Japan. So, chances are that you will find yourself at a Tokyo 7-11 if you are looking to withdraw money, find some liquid refreshment or just satisfy some late-night munchies. However, Tokyo is on the other side of the globe, and there are some major differences with the products that one can find on the shelves in Tokyo.

So, in order to clarify those differences, we at 2Foodtrippers bring you:

This brings back so many good (and bad) memories of trying to navigate Japanese labeling and trying to figure out, "Could I eat that?" Of course, that question isn't limited to just 7-11.

I just got back from a business trip to Japan and the 7-11s were a lifesaver for their ATMs - there are a surprising lack of ATMs in Japan! As for green tea kitkats, I didn't see nuggets but I brought a whole box of them home with me. Amazing!

Excellent! I've read about the KitKats, but the other stuff is an interesting surprise. ;-)
