Taste the Flavors Of The Swedish Archipelago In Nynesham

Located on the southern tip of the Stockholm archipelago, Nynashamn Sweden is a lovely spot to relax and sample local Swedish cuisine. At least that’s what we did during our first visit to Scandinavia.

Summer is an odd time to visit Stockholm. Days are absurdly long, and most restaurants are temporarily closed since the majority of residents go away for extended vacations or to their second homes in the archipelago.

Don’t get us wrong – we fell in love with Stockholm during our first visit to Sweden’s vibrant capital city for so many reasons: stunning sunsets, modern style, happening coffee culture and (of course) meatballs. And what a treat it was to eat and relax in nearby Nynashamn during our whirlwind visit.

Located less than an hour’s drive from Stockholm, Nynashamn is a charming town with a picturesque fishing port and a happening food culture. Most of the businesses are family-owned and operated, alleviating the need for chain stores and restaurants.

Flavors Of The Archipelago In Nynashamn Sweden

Although we were there for just a short visit, we had just enough time to taste many of the flavors of the archipelago. Check out the highlights:

Brewery Tour At Nynäshamns Ångbryggeri AB

Craft beer at Nynäshamns Ångbryggeri in Nynashamn Sweden
Craft beer is alive and well in Sweden! Nynäshamns Ångbryggeri produced 800,000 liters of beer last year and is Sweden’s fourth largest microbrewer. | Image: ©2foodtrippers

Located in an old power plant, Nynäshamns Ångbryggeri started brewing small batches of sustainable lager in 1997 and has grown to a production of 800,000 liters in a year.

During our tour, Angela (one of the brewery’s 14 employees) poured seven beers including the brewery’s popular Landsort Lager. We were partial to Nynäshamns’ Arketyp, a beer made in collaboration with Delaware’s Dogfish Head Brewery, one of our favorites back in the states.

Brewed with ingredients like wheat, lingonberries, cranberries, myrica gale, yarrow, meadowsweet, honey and birch syrup, this complex beer is no slouch with a 10% ABV.

Pro Tip
Tours must be pre-booked. Don’t fret if you aren’t able to schedule a tour – this local beer is as easy to find as it is to drink.

Nynäshamns Ångbryggeri AB is located at Lövlundsvägen 4, 149 30 Nynäshamn, Sweden.

Smoked Fish At Nynas Fish & Seafood Smokery

Smoked Salmon in Nynashamn Sweden
If we had a bucket list, then we could check off eating smoked salmon in Sweden. It was everything we hoped for and more. | Image: ©2foodtrippers

After visiting smokehouses during our travels in Hastings (England) and Western Ireland, we were curious to try smoked salmon in Sweden. Nynäs Rökeri & Fishkhall is a great spot to taste smoked salmon as well as a range of other fish delicacies like shrimp salad, smoked herring and prawns with mayonnaise. T

The smokery procures most of its salmon from Norway and then salts the fatty fish for 24 hours before smoking it using both hot and cold processes. During our visit, Nynäs’ Nathalie Kullenberg fed us well and made sure we tasted the salmon with chili. Thank you Nathalie!

Nynäs Rökeri & Fiskhall AB is located at Fiskargränd 6, 149 30 Nynäshamn, Sweden.

Dinner At Restaurang Kroken

Just a stone’s throw from the smokery, Restaurang Kroken serves a full menu featuring fresh fish and beer from our new favorite local brewery. We enjoyed the Lemon Baked Cod, a meaty fish with loads of flavor.

Alas, due to time constraints, we did not try any starters or desserts. No complaints here – it’s hard to complain about eating a delicious piece of fish with a view of the harbor.

Restaurang Kroken is located at Fiskargränd 8, 149 30 Nynäshamn, Sweden.

Sausage At Sorunda Korvfabrik AB

People sometimes ask us if eat meat. They are clearly not followers of this site because we do not hide our love for beef, chicken and pork.

In Nynashamn, we were able to celebrate our sausage love during a private tour of Sorunda Korvfabrik AB, a multi-generational sausage factory founded back in 1973. Before touring the facility, we tasted four flavorful sausages including merguez, chorizo, mild and garlic.

Sorunda Korvfabrik AB is located at Segersängsvägen 10, 148 96 Sorunda, Sweden.

Cheese At Gårdsmejeriet Sanda Dairy Farm

Cheese is one of our greatest pleasures in life, so it’s no surprise that we enjoyed visiting a small Swedish dairy farm during our time in Nynashamn.

After leaving the corporate world, the owners of Gårdsmejeriet Sanda buy milk from two local farms and produce pasteurized cheeses like Brie and Camembert. They also sell jams made from local flowers and provide cheese samples in their on-site farm shop.

Gårdsmejeriet Sanda is located at Klockarlötsvägen 5, 137 95 Österhaninge, Sweden.

Fika At Hembygdsstugan

You only need a small slice of Sorunda Tarta. This local Nynashamn dessert is very dense and has five to seven layers. | Image: ©2foodtrippers

Of all the things that we love about Sweden, and there are many, the fika concept is on the top of our list. To fika is to take a break with coffee and pastry, two of our favorite things.

The fika concept is alive and well throughout the country, and Nynashamn is no exception. However, in Nynashamn, people often fika with the local specialty of Sorunda Tårta.

We’d tell you what’s in the Sorunda Tårta, but we’re not entirely sure. We know that the ornately decorated cake has flour, sugar, applesauce and prunes. However, each family passes the recipe down from mother to daughter (sorry guys!), and the recipes are kept close to the vest.

Common themes are that the cake always has five to seven layers as well as a hole in the middle for applesauce. Traditionally, apples were used for weddings and prunes for funerals, but the two fruits are mixed together today for maximum flavor.

Relaxation At Nynäs Havsbad

After a full day of touring and eating, Nynäs Havsbad is the perfect spot to relax and watch the sun set over the Baltic Sea. Although the water temperature in July was too cold for a dip in the sea, the temperature of the outdoor hot tub was perfectly divine. The hotel also has indoor saunas for the full Swedish experience.

That cheese dish looks delightful Mindi. I'd be on that like mad LOL. We recently did a few hour layover in Stockholm but the surrounding area - and the city itself - looks awesome, super awesome. Spoke to a few folks who've visited Sweden regularly and they raved about it. Smelled that amazing smoked fish at restaurants around the airport. Heaven. I'm not even a fish eater per se but the smoked flavor and scent pulls me in.

Thanks for sharing :)
